This beautiful home located in Southwest Portland was in dire need of an updated kitchen, laundry room/pantry and powder bath with storage. It was important to complement the interior architecture and the decorating style of the clients. The ceiling was a beautifully stained warm cherry color that most people never noticed, as there was little relationship between the ceiling and the décor of the room.

The clients fell in love with our natural cherry cabinets in Merillat’s Masterpiece Montresano door, which features a recessed panel with wide stiles and rails around the perimeter of the doors and a flat drawer front. Following the same cabinetry layout in the kitchen, we were able to enlarge slightly the refrigerator space to accommodate today’s appliance selections. As well in the laundry room we were able to build a recessed pantry storage unit utilizing stock cabinetry. Now there is not only room for hanging laundry and other laundry items, but also additional storage for food and less used items for the kitchen. The cabinetry counter is a lovely black granite square that adds a contemporary accent with minimal accessories.

The clients desired to add:

1. Drawers under the cooktop.

2. Oven and microwave in one tall unit.

3. Storage over the refrigerator.

4. Drawers and pull out trays in the peninsula.

5. Base display cabinet on the family room side with clear glass.

6. Pull out filler to the left of the oven cabinet to store hanging potholders, long utensils, etc.

7. As many drawers as possible.

8. Laundry room pantry storage. Previously a rolling hanging center dominated the room. Now all can be placed behind cabinetry drawers to allow easy traffic flow through the room.

9. Powder bath had no storage as the sink was hung on the wall and brightly colored. Storage is now available in the sink cabinet.

Their friends now remark, “The kitchen is beautiful; is that a new ceiling, too?” It is amazing what new cabinetry in the right style and color will accomplish!
